College of Foreign Languages and Literatures
Founded in 1963, the College of Foreign Languages (CFL) currently consists of six departments: English, German, French, Spanish, Japanese, and Italian. CFL’s Graduate Institute of Cross-Cultural Studies offers master’s programs in linguistics and translation, an in-service master’s program in translation, and a doctoral program in comparative literature. We also offer programs through the Center for Japanese Studies.
The College is committed to FJCU’s academic goals and to the pursuit of Truth, Goodness, Beauty, and Holiness. Our fundamental philosophy is to serve society through language and to change the world through the sharing of cultures. Building off this foundation, the College employs language as the medium by which students gain greater understanding of the uniqueness and particular viewpoints of different cultures. We are committed to holistic education and training professionals who possess robust critical thinking skills and a global perspective. As part of our commitment to an education in the liberal arts, the College promotes the spirit of service-learning, encourages cultural awareness, and produces language experts who are responsible social actors.
